The Arab Peninsular represents a fast-growing region for maritime activity, facilitating 10% of global trade worth US$1.72 trillion annually and hosting top offshore energy production which employs thousands of workers. Unfortunately, natural events like squalls, sandstorms, and high winds or waves may threaten the workers' safety and cause disasters like oil spills. 

 

Develop a Squall Early Warning System for the Red Sea and Gulf region, utilizing satellite data and imageries.

Challenge Statement:

Located along the typhoon belt in the Pacific, the Philippines is visited by an average of 20 typhoons per year. One of the deadliest, Typhoon Haiyan, had killed more than 7,300 lives and displaced 4 million people. It took 5 years for the city to recover with the cost of rebuilding amounts to US$5.8 billion dollars.  

 

Develop a real-time typhoon forecasting system utilizing satellite data and imageries.

A chiller is often the single largest consumer of power in a building. Cutting down power consumption on chiller plants will result in significant cost-saving for the building operators and reduce CO2 emissions.

 

Develop a solution that will automatically reduce power consumption while optimizing the performance of chiller plants.

Challenge Statement:

A chiller plant occasionally undergoes system failure due to multiple factors (e.g. freezing pipe, clogging, broken motor starter, etc). For critical environments like IT server room or hospital ward, downtime in chiller plant operations could cost up to million dollars damage or endanger lives.

 

Develop predictive diagnostics solutions which will accurately pre-empt potential fault scenarios.

Periods of heavy rain have become more common, resulting in more frequent occurrences of flash floods. This could impact resources and daily life, for instance, runoff contamination, property damage, congestion etc.​

Develop a flood predictive system that can be used as a geospatial early warning.

Challenge Statement:

JK Tech is developing new authentication technology for various medium of use, e.g. mobile devices, desktop, camera and other devices using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology.

 

Develop an application to test and enhance the capabilities of OCR, including image pre-processing and text post-processing algorithm.

Energetix installs and maintains state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic (PV) across Singapore and South East Asia countries. To ensure photovoltaic systems perform at maximum capacity and reduce maintenance cost, it is essential to minimize the occurrence of equipment failures.

Develop a real-time predictive maintenance system that sends alert for upcoming PV operational failure.

Energetix designs, engineers, procures and constructs solar PV system. The company operates and maintains PV systems installed throughout Asia Pacific countries. Christopher Inglin, the CEO, also plays a role as Vice Chairman of Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore.

 

RecycMed - IoT Datathon 1.0

Challenge Statement:

In Singapore, there are occasions where home-care patients pass on and the family wants to donate the hospital furniture. There is a severe lack of manpower to manage logistics and establish connections to interested parties who need this equipment, resulting in a huge amount of wastage.

 

Develop an interactive matchmaking application to enable resale or recycling of this hospital furniture. This includes the valuation or appraisal, logistics and storage for the second-hand equipment.

It requires someone well-versed in the medical sector to advise them about services they would require. Such advisory services may help address the congestion at polyclinics and better utilise underused facilities.

 

Develop an intelligent system for healthcare advisory taking into account of the patient condition and demographic data. The system will provide recommendations for daily preventive measures, financial packages and social support information.

Geospatial Singapore Rainfall Radar Calibration – NUS Data Science Challenge 2018

Challenge Statement: 
Weather radar plays a huge role in making accurate weather forecasts for “smart cities”. Nonetheless, radars are sensitive to calibration errors which reduce the accuracy of the data collected. On the other hand, there are rain gauges that measure rainfall data more accurately than radar, however, they are only showing measurement at specific coordinates
.


Develop a radar calibration algorithm that calibrates rainfall radar data against rain gauge data.
